- Your JOB will never make you rich.
Your JOB will never make you rich.
Let me explain...
It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor.
What is true wealth?
Well the definition varies for everyone.
For some it is having 3 Lamborghinis.
For others it is the ability to go hiking on a Monday morning instead of worrying about the Gmail inbox being flooded.
The problem with social media nowadays is that a large majority of people think that success is about how much you own and nothing more.
What should we actually be aiming for in life?
This is one of the hardest questions to answer but I think there is a way to go about it. Here’s the blueprint I used…
At the end of my university career I was left with a choice:
Further my education - very safe and somewhat predictable
Chase a risky but exciting career in business
How on Earth did I navigate the choice?
Well I used this method:
While driving to gym one morning it dawned on me - if I were to become a lawyer what would my life look like in 10 years time?
Long hours, great pay, stuck at home/in the office, LOTS OF READING…
I visualised myself very clearly in that position and I immediately got quite anxious. That wasn’t what I wanted.
I think I far preferred the status that came with being a lawyer than the profession itself and that had lead me astray for almost 3 years.
My alternative also made me anxious…but I was far more willing to spend 10 years betting on myself in business over taking the “safe route.”
You need to know what you want your life to be like to understand what your next step should be. Plan, execute and iterate - it really is that simple.
If you see yourself enjoying making pottery until you’re 40, BE THE BEST POTTERY MAKER YOU CAN BE. That is freedom. That is true wealth.
Don’t let Suits or Wolf of Wallstreet dictate your every move even though they do look really cool.
Again…what is wealth then?
Wealth is working toward something that gives your purpose everyday.
Things like money, cars and houses are a by-product of people striving for greatness in a task they have a natural gift for or have a true passion for.
Watching someone enter the flow state while doing work meaningful to them is inspiring.
It’s why we pack out stadiums to watch footballers.
It’s why we pay to watch blockbuster movies on the big screen.
People are attracted to other people pushing their purpose to the absolute limit whether that be in sport, academics…anything.
So don’t chase the money or the cars, chase MASTERY and those things will come.
As always, keep creating
Take care
